Over a billion people in China and millions around the world will celebrate the the Chinese New Year – the most important of Chinese holidays, and this will be on January 28, 2017. It’s a lunar new year and so the date is based on the date of new moon. Festivities continuing for 15 days and culminating with the Lantern Festival. Each year is associated with one of 12 animals in the Chinese zodiac. For 2017, it’s the Year of the Rooster.
Likewise, here in Manila, it has also been a tradition amongst the Chinese people. With this, Crystal Jade announces their newest offering for the season - three different set menus fit for kings and queens, and super foodies as well.
Yu Sheng is a tradition were in a mix o shredded spring vegetables and choiced raw fish are placed in a huge platter. It follows a 12 step procedure with one person to facilitate and lead the chant. After all the ingredients were mixed in the plater everyone gets their chopstick and joins in the tossing (the higher toss of the ingredients the better) as everyone chants "Lo Hei" 12 times.
Together with that a famous communal dish called Treasure Pot or "Poon Choi" can be ordered.
It is a Cantonese cuisine served in large wooden, porcelain or metal basins due to the communal style of consumption. The Chinese name, transliterated as Poon choi, has been variously translated as “big bowl feast”, “basin cuisine” or “Chinese casserole”.
I was blessed to have tried this together with some other food enthusiasts and it was indeed irresistible as it's broth is ultimately savory, thickened and bloating with flavors as it every ingredients have soaked up the glorious juices from the soup that had been braising in the pot.
This bowl also symbolizes the sharing of good fortune and abundance of wealth among family and friends.
Above is the Pan-fried Kurobuta with Teriyaki Sauce.
It's definitely a premium dish as the tender Kurobuta beef is glazed with tangy and sweet sauce.
Every set has the Yu Sheng, Treasure Pot, the Kurobuta and the Flourishing Fortune Glutinous Rice Cake plus some other Crystal Jade signature dishes.
Below are the set menus being offered...
The Prosperity Set Menu is good for 10 persons, costs P 20,000 +++.
More than the dishes shared above, half of the Suckling Pig is also listed.
I was surprised by the sight of it as it sure looked like it tastes amazing. The pig laid out beautifully with meat chopped up together with its thin crackling skin on top. I knew that from the second I take a portion of it, there would be seconds and even more...
As a healthier option Steamed Live Garoupa in Soy Sauce, which is also included in the set. The mild taste of the fish blended so well with the mildly spiced broth.
The Fried Rice with Scallop, Crabmeat and Crab Roe makes a perfect carb to match the fish and the Suckling Pig dish.
You may want to take note that everything I was able to try were carefully delivered so well, as they weren't salty and overpowering on the spice and seasoning, same goes with the fried rice, but it was definitely enjoyable.
The Fortune Set Menu on the other hand, highlighted a whole Peking Duck but without the fish dish. Instead of the fried rice Braised Eefu Noodles with Shredded Duck Meat. This set serves 8.
Lastly, the Abundance Set Menu which is half the serving of the Fortune Set Menu which is for 6 people.
