LJC's New Signature Dish Launched in Celebration of Their 35th Year

I have always been smitten by how innovative the menu's are at any LJC Group of restaurants.  It was at Cafe Adriatico when my husband took me (for the first time, as opposed to having regular coffee dates) to try one of the best (if not the best) simmering cup of local chocolate, known to many us "Tsokolate Eh" or "Tsokolate Ah."  It was at Abe (the one in Serendra that I realized that fishes when deep fried can turn to butterflies - Binukadkad na Pla-Pla in the menu.  Also, in Abe where I first tried steamed rice with a full flavor that only comes from the forest, served dramatically on bamboo and cracked open right in front of you.  To know what Maria's Secret is, you must have room for their famous desserts, Claude's Dream and Sikreto ni Maria Clara.

It was again at Abe, when my crucible knowledge for gourmet spots to bring Filipino's who have been away for a long, long  time in our country's glorious cuisine, was tested.  Never did I disappoint our guest who is now heading our group Eat and Cheat Cancer and the team whom I was with to enjoy a truly Filipino hefty lunch.  Then I fell in love with their Sinigang na Bangus Belly with Ripe Guava.

With Fely J's Kitchen now on some places in Manila, Capampangan dining have never been such an ease.  No more driving for hours just to savor Pampanga's delicacies such as Camaru (crunchy toasted mole crickets), Pako  salad (forest fern sprouts), Sugpo with Kamias and Rellenong Pusit.

I have only known LJC group for only 6 years (which started with Cafe Adriatico) and just last 2012 when I came to know who LJC is when I was listed by DOT's for Kulinarya Kalayaan, a culinary event highlighting Rizal's 100th year.    The man everyone know as Larry J. Cruz, the restaurateur behind the success of The LJC Group, the man who shaped the casual dining experience of the country with his many theme restaurants and was regarded "pioneer in theme or concept restaurants" and "he who shaped the Philippine cafe society."

For the past three decades, The LJC Restaurant Group have paved the way to dishes that have captured the fancy of diners at their different restaurants.  Some of these dishes have transcended the life of the restaurants they were created for, becoming signature dishes in LJC Group.

On its 35th year, the LJC group will be offering a celebratory dish: the Garlic Pork Leg Espanole, shown on the heading of this post.   The whole pork leg given the panache of Spanish way of preparing with fried whole garlic cloves and potatoes in olive oil, which then is served with a tangy herb sauce.   The crisp outer layer with the tender perfectly cooked pork meat that has the right saltiness is perfect to highlight a celebratory dinner with family and friends.

Back at their flagship branch, Cafe Adriatico, I was delighted to have partaken a feast from LJC.

The dinner started with Gambas al Ajillo.  It's a rich dish of shrimp in garlic infused tomato-based sauce.

Followed after with Hummus and Pita Bread.

These pickled veggies were also served together with the latter.

We were also served with a bowl of Cream of two Mushrooms, button and Shitake.
Great to have the soup with these slices of garlic bread.

Then, the queen of all the dishes came, the Garlic Pork Leg Espanole.

I love the tangy tomato and caper sauce which are greatly topped in this photo.  This is the Blue Marlin Provencale.  A simple and traditional fish dish but one that's remarkably delish and worth having for any dining occasios.

Another that caught me arguing with my self (my other self is telling me not to have this, for I'm half way full, but the stronger me said, I've got to!) is the U.S.Tederloin Steak Solana.

Make sure you have them with the house' Buttered Vegetables.

Finally, to cap the night off sweetly we had  Mango Crepes.  Flambeed fresh mango, topped with chocolate syrup. The mango gave that tartness which also  creates some pleasure even kinda remove that "umay-factor" after having all those rich dishes.  Though I'm not a crepe-person, I love the simplicity of this dessert, and what can a chocolate syrup not do to a sweet-toothed foodie like me?

All these and a whole lot more can be enjoyed at Cafe Adriatico.  The Garlic Pork Leg Espanole however can now be sampled at any LJC Group of restaurants.

California Pizza Kitchen's EAT. SNAP. UPLOAD.

I'm one happy camper!  As I was once again reunited with my favorite pizzas from California Pizza Kitchen. Each slice of pizza happiness is the closest thing to stepping in California and I don't need to get a Visa. Of course, my visit to CPK, Greenbelt was a secret to my kids.  Else they'd get dismayed if I didn't bring them along.  You see, if  my kids were to ask about a food they like best, they would shout out pizza in a heartbeat.

The first time they tried CPK was during the time they revamped their menu with the addition of the vintage pizzas.  They found Santa Fe Chicken Pizza interesting with the guacamole and all, while the Tostada Chicken Pizza won them over with the crispy tortilla chips which are home made btw, they would always ask their Dad to go back for some.

We have always been a creature of habit, though they have favorite thin crust pizza choices already they have added CPK on their list and I love it when they try to explore on new food fare.

I guess I have already told you a part of the story of my kids' love to pizza.  Or did I tell too much?
Now, it's your turn to tell your story, who knows you might bring home your favorite CPK pizzas for FREE!

A Glimpse of How the 28 Years of Freedom Was Attained

During our last trip to Tarlac City, we made it possible to visit the Aquino Center Museum at the Hacienda Luisita.  Our little girls have been asking a lot about the late couple Ninoy Aquino and Pres. Cory Aquino.

So what better way to educate them about a short course on our freedom history than to see and quote from the actual elements which catapulted the event that had set the wold all in awe as our fathers, uncles and brothers fought for our freedom.

"It is true you cannot eat freedom and you cannot power machinery with democracy. But then neither can political prisoners turn on the light in the cells of a dictatorship."

Mabuhay Germany 2014 at BGC

The forged relationship between the Philippines and Germany had taken heights even long before the Mabuhay Germany campaign launched in 2008.  Now, this year marks the 60th year of friendship between the Philippines and Germany.  To celebrate the six decades of diplomatic relations, the Germany community is holding a two-day festivities in Bonifacio High Street which hopes to bring a slice of Germany in Manila.

Mabuhay Germany is an annual program to introduce Germany closer to the hearts of Filipino people.  This is a rare opportunity to get a glimpse of German business, cooperation, and development efforts, education, culture, food and lifestyle all in a single location - 9th Ave.  Bonifacio High Street, BGC.

Everyone is invited to join in the celebration starting today, February 22 until tomorrow, Feb. 23, 2014.  The event highlights German gastronomic delights, Deutsche business, culture and fun-filled activities for all the members of the family.

I was there this morning and met some Germans who man the booths and explain how Germany is building strong bonds with our Philippine industry and market.

DOT's Tourism Star Philippines Unveiled

With the enduring success of DOT's It's More Fun in the Philippines campaign, which showcases what our country has to offer is an event that capitalizes the true meaning of tourism.   Beyond the majestic, scenic, enthralling beauty of our country, are the Filipinos known to be one of the happiest and warmest people on the planet.   Quoted from DOT Secretary Ramon R. Jimenez, Jr.’s rationale for this campaign, “while other countries invite you to observe, the Philippines can promise a more heartfelt experience. Wherever you go, whatever you do in the country, it’s the Filipinos who will complete your vacation and will make your holiday unforgettable."

DOT Undersecretary Maria Victoria V. Jasmin is the key note speaker
and have welcomed everyone on the event
It was such an honor to have witnessed the launching of DOT's Tourism Star Philippines, last February 11, 2014 at the Constellation Ballroom of the Manila Diamond Hotel.  The Department of Tourism (DOT) created a new set of awards for individuals who exemplified strong and deep commitment to the country's tourism through exemplary customer service and investment in tourism development efforts.  The awards for Tourism Star are divided into two categories:

1. Tourism front-liners and individuals who embody the true Filipino brand of warm hospitality, of going the extra mile in the service of tourists, and
2. Local Chief Executives (LCE), a mayor or a governor, whose projects contribute positively to the tourism industry.

The first category is open to all Filipinos who have direct or indirect contact with tourists and who may belong to one of the following: (a) travel agencies and tour operators; (b) tour guides;  (c) tourist transport (tour buses, taxis, kalesas, etc.)  (d) accommodation establishments; and (e) individual service providers that may include entrepreneurs, government employees, policemen and others who do not fall under any of the mentioned sectors.  Each individual that will be nominated  must have shown Filipino quality of hospitality; flexibility, adaptability and creativity; honesty;  professionalism; and promptness.

On the other hand, potential Tourism Star from the local chief executive (LCE/ mayors or governors) category, must have "led", headed", contributed", or "facilitated" tourism movement in their community, tourism income, and jobs creation.
Moreover, nominees must not only be backed up by a list of tourism-related accomplishments, but also a proof of support to DOT regulatory and development functions such as preparation of local tourism office budget and work plan, enactment of local ordinances on mandatory accreditation and collection of tourism statistics, among others.  The LCE Star nominees will be judged according to institutional, promotions, planning and product development, regulatory, investments, centerpiece projects, support to DOT advocacies and best practices in tourism.
So what's in it for the local government community of the LCE Tourism Star awardee?
A whopping amount maximum of PhP1-M to fund a community-based tourism project proposed by the awardee (may be in the form of a training, a livelihood project, or a product development or enhancement initiative), a bronze marker to be placed  conspicuously   in his jurisdiction, free participation/booth space in a market-matched international travel fair, display of the DOT Tourism STAR logo in the LGU's website, and a trophy to be awarded by no less that President Benigno Aquino III.

Other prizes for the awardees will be  given by the program sponsors Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI), MyPhone, Duty Free Philippines (DFP), and the Technical Education Skills Development Authority  (TESDA).
Photos of the representatives are posted below.

The program will also mark a significant milestone in the DOT, as it fully implements the National Tourism Development Plan (NTDP) which leverages on public-private sector partnerships to improve competitiveness of tourism facilities and services, capacitate local government units, ensure sustainable tourism development and initiate focused marketing and promotions.

"Hopefully, the DOT's Tourism Star Philippines would not only engage more individuals and local chief executives alike to take more proactive roles in our efforts or raising competitiveness in tourism, but also in instilling in every Filipino the culture of tourism. The success or failure of tourism largely depends on how people will respond to the call of nation-building. And that the power is in the people's hand. We are, therefore, counting on their continued dedication and commitment to our bid towards achieving 10 million international arrivals and most importantly generating seven million jobs by 2016,"  the tourism chief added.

The deadline for submission of nominations is on May 31 of every year. The first awarding ceremony will  be held in September 2014, in time for the Tourism Week celebration.  President Benigno Aquino III will be conferring the award to the recipients.

So are you ready to nominate  someone who fits the categories?

Planning the Ultimate World Cup Party for the Girls

Soccer is definitely not just for the guys... so when you’re planning the ultimate World Cup Party for the girls, here are ten ideas to get you started.

One: Send out invitations to the get-together and include an RSVP. It’s easy to buy soccer themed invitations at most party stores, or they can be ordered online.  You could create your own invites on the computer, then print them out or email them. You might also want to set up an events page through a social networking site like Facebook.

Two: Go wild with soccer decorations and really celebrate the World Cup!  Almost all party stores have sports’ sections and disposable plates and cups in every color imaginable. (Paper products make clean-up so much easier.) You can buy party favors, streamers, and balloons to add an extra burst of excitement.

Three: Make coasters from green felt or AstroTurf, and place potted wheatgrass topped with tiny team flags and miniature soccer balls around the room.

Four: Create a runner for your table that looks like a soccer field. Green felt, fabric, or contact paper make it easy to be creative.

Five: Celebrate with finger-foods and cupcakes! Decide on a menu; once you have a general idea about how many guests you’re expecting, you can plan your shopping list. Finger-foods are great. Your guests can relax and enjoy the game while nibbling on all the delicious treats. Remember to prepare more food than you think you’ll need!

Six: Some cool ideas for cupcakes:

Frost the cupcakes with favorite team colors, and then add white piping to the top with player numbers.
Decorate the tops with little plastic soccer balls or miniature players; these can be found at most party supply stores, or online. Place them along the table runner or serve on green sports platters.
Purchase soccer-themed toothpicks at the local party store. Stick the toothpicks in green frosted cupcakes or into cupcakes with white or chocolate frosting covered in green sprinkles.
Use frosting to design your own World Cup shapes. Make the round top into a soccer ball or sketch gel flags on the icing.
Place one letter on the top of each cupcake to spell-out W-O-R-L-D C-U-P, B-R-A-Z-I-L, or the name of their favorite T-E-A-M!
Use candy or M&Ms to decorate the cake-tops. Your friends will love cupcakes completely covered in colorful candies, or have your guests design and decorate their own.

Seven: Serve a special World Cup fruit-punch in a clear bowl and drop round ice cubes into each cups. Serve drinks in bottles or cans to make clean-up and recycling that much easier.

Eight: Place your bets, ladies! Who do you think will win the World Cup in Brazil? It’s so much fun to cheer on for your team and it makes the games that much more exciting. Be one step ahead by checking the statistics and reading up on team’s odds – an educated decision is better than a random guess!

Nine: Play games: memory and soccer trivia games make terrific ice-breakers. Give the winners wrapped trinkets, party favors, and/or sports paraphernalia!

Ten: Set up simple craft activities. Guests will enjoy decorating their own nametags and designing team flag to wave during the game. Set out felt, fabric, sticks, stickers, sequins, and markers and…

Get creative! After all hosting the ultimate World Cup Party is all about HAVING FUN!

PHILIP Lifestyle Guy! Season 2

Last February 8, I was back to of my favorite Filipino buffet restaurant, Guearra's by Chef Laudico, to join a bloggers event for the second season opening of PTV 5's Philip Lifestyle Guy.  Aside from the sumptuous buffet of snack we partake, we also got to know the PR man himself, Philip Abadicio more and how his show grew to have have more followers and of course viewers.

I've known Philip for years now, from the time when I was actually starting this blog.  But of course you may still ask, "So is Philip Abadicio?"

Over 20 years ago, Philip Abadicio was invited to write for the lifestyle section of the Manila Times. He had no journalism background but he always wanted to know what was the latest, the newest restaurants and food finds, the upcoming designer and the best new work of the artists, the interior decorators and the culturati, and he wanted to know how the glitterati lived. It was the end of the excessive discos of the 80s and the start of the all-night clubbing 90s.
For years, Philip Abadicio has been writing about the newest, the most delicious, the best dressed, the ultimately exclusive, and the lives of the rich and raunchy. He was also a PR practitioner and established RPA & Communicate where he mastered the ropes of the lifestyle industry.  The experience gave him the chance to hobnob with some of the country’s celebrities in society, showbiz, business, politics and media.  It molded Philip into the Lifestyle Guy. His renewed contract for a 2nd Season with TV5 has given him an assurance of his status as the only TV show and host that paves the way for lifestyle to be more interesting and within reach of all Filipinos. Philip Lifestyle Guy airs Sundays, 11 a.m. to 12 noon on TV5.

“In the past, lifestyle was mostly for the affluent, the highly educated, and because of this perception, it catered to a very limited audience. I want Philip Lifestyle Guy to be relevant and enjoyed not only by people of wealth and influence but by all our Kapatid here and abroad,” explains Philip Abadicio with so much passion.  The lifestyle show will make the audience experience the delicious food, the wonderful places, the latest gadgets, the latest fashion, the beauty fixes, the spa treatments, and all other aspects of lifestyle.
Philip fondly calls his viewers and readers ‘lifestylers.’ “It’s a term of endearment for all those who watch the show, consult me about their lifestyle concerns, have joined our contests on-air and of course, online,” he shares.  Philipabadicio.com brings the art and style of living with more in-depth information on some of the feature stories of the show, Philip Lifestyle Guy. The show and more recently, the website, have become an eye-opener on how life can be lived in style and with loads of fun. Philipabadicio.com is the Lifestyle Guy’s Site for Lifestylers!

“We hope to provide a lifestyle show where we all learn and be more conscious of the beautiful, inspiring and delicious things around us. It’s a show that I’m hoping will educate, entertain and inspire all of us,” he explains. Philip Lifestyle Guy will be visually appealing, culturally enriching, and gastronomically appetizing with the different segments in every episode.

In 2014, lifestyle is made move available by Philip Lifestyle Guy and philipabadicio.com. There are on-air and online contests where the audience and readers can easily participate and win various lifestyle experiences. You can also find out about the contests, winners and other announcements on their social media accounts: ‘like’ Philip K. Abadicio on Facebook and ‘follow’ @philipabadicio on Twitter and Instagram.

Philip Lifestyle Guy is produced by Style RPA Media, directed by Dave Hukom and Tootoots Leyesa, and written by Rod Divinagracia. It airs on TV5 every Sunday from 11 a.m. to 12 noon. Set to provide more fun, information and entertainment to your TV viewing experience, get ready to travel Metro Manila and other parts of the country with style, as media maven Philip Abadicio shows you how to celebrate and live a good, happy and stylish lifestyle, whatever status, situations and circumstances you have right now.

But if time does not permit, the day can still be exceptional with the Valentine offerings of Century Park Hotel.

Last Monday, hubby and I once again were able to celebrate the love month early.  We had a lovely lunch at Cafe in the Park, a sumptuous buffet spread that was meticulously prepared by the hotel's chefs.

Let me mention that the buffet run a different themed buffet everyday.  On Friday, February 14, 21014, Valentines day, the theme is "Fisherman's Day."   So enjoy fresh catch of the day dished up and mixed with a smorgasbord of gastronomic delights.

Hubby began with the soup of the day.  They usually serve two.  He had a very hearthy thick mushroom soup.

We were\blessed that day for they have lamb chops and roast beef.

There are three sections to find your kind of dessert.  This one are just the pastry choices.

The following photos are just some of the fares we had...

Let me highlight this event with my dessert of choice, Halo-halo.  It was my first time to concoct my one glass, it was a thrill (sorry I'm just "mababaw"), I had all my favorite ingredients in it with fresh milk topped off with a creamy Ube Halaya and a smooth and silky slice of Leche Flan.

Hubby had on the other hand a nicely-done Mango Crepe with Vanilla Ice cream and drizzled with chocolate syrup.

The Valentines Day Buffet dinner starts at 5:30 pm for only P 1.250 + per adult

But if you are aiming for a not-so-typical dinner, you may opt to have it at Century Tsukiji and express your love the Japanese way with "Ai Shi Teru" (Japanese Phrase for I love you) and enjoy a Kobito Set Menu for Two for only P 1,895 +  per order.  Starting form Feb. 13 to 15 during 5:30 to 9:30 pm.
