Of Recreation and Fete at Sariwon's 7th Anniversary Plus A New Premium Beef Barbecue Menu

One of the best thing that happened to our family last year was a tour around the famous places in Seoul, South Korea.  The highlight of that tour was for all six of us to wear Hanbok, so I did put my husband and eldest son up to the challenge, for they too had donned the traditional Korean clothes which we rented out from one of the stores in Bukchon Village.

Hanbok-wearing is part of the cultural experience when visiting Korea.  It is worn by Koreans during special occasions and holidays.  So I made sure we get that ticked off on our must-try list.  It was a dream come true for me and my three girls to walk along the alleys of Bukchon Village and Gyeongbokgung Palace sporting the colorful clothes, however, what we missed was to dine over Korean BBQ on them.

Till Sariwon's 7th Anniversary.

J-Rams Coffee Bistro Pastries

Birthdays are big deals for us, especially when it is March.  It's the season when we celebrate the whole month with a number of cakes and it had become the busiest month next to December.  We celebrate three birthdays on March, my SIL, my daughter Danielle and mine.

As much as I would want to throw a party, I couldn't, my daughter doesn't like parties, and my husband does not like to spend!  LOL!  I used to cook for my kids but pastas, baked chicken and cakes have been passé.  And since Kdrama is in, so does K-cuisine, Korean food.  .

Jin Joo Korean Grill at SM Aura Premier

When I was invited to try out Rack Shack at it's newest branch in SM Aura, I saw this peachy Korean restaurant and I thought it's  a total embodiment of K-Dramas.

My girls had influenced me into watching K-Dramas and well, I also got caught in this Korean wave and let me just say, binge-watching the series I'm following had been worth it.

Mr. Pizza, Korea's Biggest Pizza Chain is Making a Bang in Greenbelt

I think we are not yet done with the fusion theme in the foodie scene.  Real foodies, I mean foodies adventurous enough to spare some money for a one of kind food, those who are on the look out for that innovative taste and something that can also be amusing at that.

So here's the thing, I just had my kids introduced to a Korean Chicken franchise, you know, the twice fried, sweet and spicy, crunchy and saucy chicken wings and drumsticks.  Bhogs and I was quite surprised to see that they liked it.  I, on one hand, had my fingers and tastes buds all crazy with the Crunchy Garlic and Seoul Fried Rice.

This time around, I had them try the new Korean pizza that had opened recently at Greenbelt, Makati. Say what?

The unique theme of Korea's  Mr. Pizza is based on the 300% principle, all pizzas are 100% hand-kneaded, 100% full-hearted topping and 100% grill baked.  Will expound on that when I get to the pizzas I've tried.

Expect a fun welcome greeting and a courteous service, as the door flung open to a well-lit, modern looking dining area with a circular open station for making the pizzas.

On air.

Authentic Oriental Flavors at Ginzadon

Last Tuesday had been quite remarkable.  Not only that I got to bond with my friend and her grade school friend who visited (she's based in Los Angeles), I also found out about an association called KBF or Kaisahang Buhay Foundation.  What was distinctive was learning about the pregnant women who are being cared by this organization.  One of KBF's advocacy is providing a temporary shelter to abused pregnant women and another is foster care service to unwanted babies.  The three of us paid a visit to this particular house and gave hope to these girls and women.  I'll definitely be writing about that experience and we will come back there armed with spanking ways to help them more.

In other news, I was expecting to have a lovely dinner with my hubs at one of Resorts World Manila's first-rate restaurants.  We have been meaning to get a load of Asian dishes to modify our erratic comfort food eat outs.  Little did he know, we will be having admirable oriental classics at nonetheless than Ginzadon, poised at the second level of Maxim's Hotel.

Resort's World Manila have perfected luxurious entertainment and they're at the helm of designing more concepts to cater to different clients, whether local metro dwellers or foreigners. They have proven to top the saying that there is more to life than just working hard, most of the time, it really pays to reward yourself with memorable pleasures, and RWM have it all roofed in one convenient location.   Where else can you enjoy five-star hotel stay-cations, watch breath-taking theater shows, maybe dine after an array of cuisines and watch a new movie without spending on gas, and oh try your luck on the casino.

If you think they have exhausted everything at their only Manila branch, (yet) you are wrong. According to the marketing team of RWM, they are still on the verge of adding a 5,000-seat convention center with function rooms in 2014, new hotels Hilton and Sheraton in 2016 and more restaurants and facilities to be added plus not to mention their biggest project the Resorts World Bayshore along Manila Bay.

I guess if being the best in fusing different cultures and different kinds of  having fun, we can simply expect one thing from RWM, if they have aimed to bring two worlds in one dining- the best!

There I said it, Ginzadon, does not only serve authentic Japanese cuisine but also favorite Korean dishes.  Though sounding like Japanese, the restaurant's name actually was derived from, well, both countries.  The Japanese word "Ginza"  means  an upscale district in Tokyo, while "don" simply means money in Korean.

It was my first time here and I was very delighted so I will share more photos of what to look forward to.  Compared to Passion, a neighboring fine-dining resto which is expansive and have been a great venues for family and corporate events, Ginzadon is rather intimate with a dining capacity of 65 to 70 only, making it ideal for small family gatherings and company meetings.

Just like other Japanese restaurants, minimalism is their key design, wooden, earthy tones with splashes of reds.  I particularly fancy the glassed wall with cherry blossom etchings.

On the foreground, from where we came in, are three separate bars- the sushi, the sake and yakitori.

Before I could even approach the sake bar, I was lured to the bar on my right, with the commanding aroma of the meats being grilled.  I got even hungrier.

On the other side which is the sushi and teriyaki bar, are these freshly sliced fish meat.  You will be amazed that Ginzadon's kitchen have captured the essence of Japanese cuisine by taking the best of what the island nation has to offer in terms of flavor and bringing it all together here.  You will definitely feel that, once the menu is flipped open.

I was just as blessed to have met Chef Tony, or Chef Antonio Ablay in serious terms, who shyly approached  me with a greeting and mentioning that he will have me try his favorite creations.

Garbed in his sauce-splattered chef clothes, he was anxious to pose in front of my camera but was very accommodating and cheery when asked.

According to him, "In Japan, there's a difference in flavor if you go to Tokyo, which is in the north, or if you go to Osaka, which is in the south.  In the north, they tend to be heavy on salt, while in the south they prefer less.  Here at Ginzadon, I let the flavors of the north and south meet in the middle."

Here begins hub's and I's gustatory indulgence with twice the oriental flair.

I was busy taking photos and talking to the chefs behind the three bars, while these sets of banchan came ahead of me.  These are unlimited, complimentary side dishes or appetizers which you can nibble on while waiting for your order.  Honestly, it took us a while to decide what we want, they all looked heavenly on the menu.  The set we had included kimchi, Myulchi Bokkeum or stir-fried anchovies (which I almost finished just because...), pickled this and that, and more.

Soy sauce and what not already prepped on the table, serves both as an adornment.

The Ebi Tempura was first to reach our table.  What set's this tempura apart from the others, is that it’s extremely light and not oily at all, also the size is larger than the others.  There is that delicate balance that really comes across in their dishes. The seafood tempura I tried was crispy on the outside but soft inside. And the vegetable tempura dishes brought out the flavor so well I was amazed that familiar everyday vegetables could taste so good.

Next is the assorted Sashimi Moriawase set or the Special Sashimi Platter, which came with a selection of fresh and imported fresh sashimi and a sampling of uni beautifully placed in the middle. The mixed set has a variety of seafood that I’m not that familiar with, as well as elegantly cut salmon, tuna, and mackerel.  Their sashimi platter indeed has the finest cuts of delicious raw fish (at least those fish that are in my food-cabulary).  I successfully tried one of each from this platter, though I hope my love for these wasn't that obvious, hehe.

Sushi Platters' price starts from P 675 to P 1000 and P 95 to P 400 for the specific sushi orders.

You can have a divine platter with assortment of Sashimi with a price of  P 1,100 to P 1,700 while an order of one variety starts with a price of P 115.

I was not yet done with my wows, when this long, long glass rectangular plate came.  Chef Tony's signature dish - The Yulonagi Maki, Ginzadon's take on the Dragon Sushi Roll.  It's a California Roll made more appealing by topping it with "unagi" or eel prepared "Kabayaki style."

Kabayaki is a culinary skill where the eel and also other fish, is opened up like a butterfly, is filleted, and grilled with sweet soy based sauce.

It was love at first bite!

And I think I was the one who had the most maki amongst the four of us.  Another challenge being brought up was to eat a slice in one mouthful.  A bit petrified, I decided to slice it in half with a fork, with a thought on the back of my mind that I was destroying an art,  and ate half but was prompted by my instinct to eat the other as quickly while not even finishing up chewing the first bite.   Tsk, tsk, tsk...

So now, I'm wondering how to satisfy my strong craving for the juicy and smoky eel dish + maki.  Thus, I have more excuses to come back here at Ginzadon.

Then came a meager large oblongated bowl filled with savory, short-ribby goodness, drenched in a sweet, soy broth with hearty vegetables, topped with sliced fried eggs for a quirky manner.  This is Gal Bi Jim.  It's one of the best-seller among their Korean dish list.

Slightly resembling Korea Garden's Beef Stew, Gal Bi Jim is definitely comforting, with its super tender and moist meat, perfect for those moments when life totally needs a pause button.  This is best paired with Yamameshi or Gohan.

Our meal were hosted by two gorgeous ladies and they had a bowl each of Kim Chi Jji Gae (Kim chi stew), while we just had Miso Soup.

See how huge the servings are.  An order of each dish may serve up to 4 people.

Ain't that lavish, else how would you describe this feast?

How then can you end this?  Of course, with a sublime sweet course.

You can  choose from coffee jelly, to mixed fruit platter, but my best suggestions are their frozen treats.
We were served with two of their house-made ice-creams, Black Sesame Ice Cream for hubs, while Green Tea, known to their regular diners as Nuk Cha, for me.

All of these started and ended with a complimentary bottomless hot Japanese Green Tea.  Now these all can spell healthy, right?

They too have soju, sake and a wide variety of beers and other beverages to compliment your hearty Asian meals.

Everything we had that evening was nothing short of great.  We went home with happy tummies, enough not to get a midnight snack.  With that Ginzadon have won new customers in us.  This will be a great news for my kids as well, we won't have to travel far to visit their favorite Japanese resto in Nuvali.

Korean Barbecue Night at Bulgogi Brothers, MOA

This is way too exciting for me for I used to be a Bulgogi Brothers virgin.  Sure the buzz over the famous Korean international brand of restaurant franchised by The Bistro Group had hovered around, even in the food blogger's community.  But there I was still reluctant.  One reason maybe because I am not so familiar with Korean cuisines.  Majority of us in the country have had a grasp on it when the Korean Tele-novela Jewel in the Palace became famous.   The show featured the culture of Korea, as well as their style in cooking and preparing food and medicine.
I remembered how I would imagine, sensing the food she is oh-so daintily preparing to please the king and the queen.   Quite sure that most of the viewers were with eyes and mouth widely-opened and probably slobbering as they kept all attentive to the show.
Still, all it was for me was just a spectator game.  It did however crept into my foodie thought, somehow kept adept with usual hearsay from friends about how Korean foods are.   I knew it, somehow I will have that urging in me to try it.
Since then, I have only tried two different Korean restaurants.  Now, that I was able to visit Bulgogi Brothers in their Mall of Asia branch, I've added a new one on my list.  So, anyhoo, I just want to share how it was and what to recommend you if in any case you would want to buckle under your craving for Korean dishes.
Bulgogi Brothers is a go to place for Korean BBQs.  But this is not like your mom and pop Korean restos which have been around for centuries-and where only Koreans go to.

It is a hip place with modish and unique interiors.   Appealing not only to new brood foodies but to professionals as well.  At MOA, you can either have your meal al fresco facing the Manila Bay or inside dining.  Divided in two with a long leathered seating.   A large company of friends may gather on one side or be seated in a booth-type area for a more intimate dining.  Service is top-notch!  They have evened out even the minor needs of every customers.  From free Banchans to table bag hangers down to the specifics of having your food cooked on your table, by a staff.  Speaking of which, notice that every table has an induction cooker installed, and even though this is a barbecue place you don't have to worry about smelling like a grilled meat or fish for they have a good ventilation system.

Let us now focus on  the most essential thing-their offerings.
For its namesake, Bulgogi (pronuounced as [pulÉ¡oÉ¡i]) is a Korean barbecue, where prior to grilling the beef or any meat are marinated and flavoured.  The Korean word when translated to English is "fire meat."         So expect a  list of barbecue options.
Under their Barbecue Specials menu they have five options, which are all good for sharing.

Every order comes with Banchan, namely sweet potatoes, corn on the cob, quail eggs, spicy dilis, kimchi and Korean Salad, rice and hot tea for the day.
This salad alone wins me over, with the right spiciness and freshness.
Rice is served on a traditional metal bowl, careful when handling it, it's really hot.
For chicken meat lickers like me, I recommend Spicy Boneless Chicken.  I extremely loved this because not only is it  served without the fuss of eating bones with it, the meat was tender to the inside and smothered with the sauce I like, which is honey-sweet with that kick of spice making it succulent.
Who would say no to this beauty?  This platter is the Boneless Beef Ribs.  Thoroughly marinated  beef meat from the ribs with the original Bulgogi Brothers sauce.
If you can only smell the aroma that comes out while the meat is being cooked alongside some slices of onions and sweet potatoes.  Don't worry about making a mess out of it, it will be served raw (thus making sure you are getting good quality meats) but it will be cooked right in front of you by their very accommodating staff, making sure you eat it at it's finest.  I didn't mind eating a chunkful of those tender, I almost forgot we were served with rice.
   L. A. Style Short Ribs is the same with the beef ribs served about but the bone still intact.  We couldn't argue about the fact that there are people who enjoy eating ribs with the bone, I couldn't agree more.   It may not be just the fun of it, but science can back me up on this, where in the flavor are more enhanced when the meat is cooked with it's bone.  What do you think?
No matter what, with or without the bones, they all are still terrific.
Do you love bacon?  Silly me!  Who doesn't love bacon?  I guess I've yet to see one.
So if you do, you will surely love the Korean Pork Belly as well.  Pork belly are cut Korean Style and have been marinated with the same special sauce used in the other meat.
Battling with your health conscious alter-ego?  Then have some Seafood Special.  Either you have for yourself some Norwegian Salmon or Apahap fillets, both will give you the exact savory  taste you would want from the other bulgogi.  Except, a handful of  health benefits that are far too many to ignore.  Do you know that salmon is power packed with disease fighting acids, minerals and vitamins.
Look at the color of these salmon fillets.  Beyond doubt these are served from its freshness.  Of all the things I hate concerning eating with fish is the nasty odor it will give you when you cook a stale or old fish.  But be assured that you won't experience it here, except the lasting, drooling moments of savoring the aroma of a cooking fish with Bulgogi's special marinate sauce.
So either you love Bulgogi with beef, pork, chicken or fish, hard as it may seem to choose, the pick is yours.
To amp your meal here, have some Korean ice cream selection and Sochu while you're at it.

Visit any branch and sink your teeth into some delicious Korean barbecue goodness.
Bulgogi Brothers Barbecue Special is now available at their outlets in Alabang Town Center, Greenbelt 5, SM Mall of Asia, Harbor Point Mall, Subic and SM Lanang Premier.

Let Chef's Noodle Fire-up Your Senses

Oh U.M., I've missed you!
It's been sixteen long years since I last saw you.
But when I saw you again, you've changed.
From the fashionable and trendy alley now to gastronome's haven.
It might have dampened me but instead the transformation shook me up.
Nah!  I know it won't pass for a good poem.  But yes, I used to be a regular of UM , shortened from University Mall.  It used to be one of our hang-outs during college.  It's where I checked for vogue items to add to my rather traditional and commonplace apparel during those times.
Now, let us take a closer look to what had replaced my dismay.   As a consideration, I haven't been very particular to the fad for fashion, rather, I had my senses for what's new in the dining scene.   The Philippine food market has been very open to more and more cuisines, that excites me more.   Like KPOP craze and Koreans being ubiquitous everywhere in the country, it's not far from reality that their food storm our dining tables.
Korean restaurants, though few have been present since 1974, not many know about this.   And boy, how could we have missed the famous Korea-novela "Jewel in the Palace."  It did put a remarkable mark of awareness for us Filipinos about the dishes Koreans love, enticing us to try it.   Kimchi being the most famous is served in almost all of their dishes.  It is like the Korean's Salad.
Oh, how could I have forgotten, what really replaced my dismay was this Korean restaurant that my husband and I had tried,  Chef's Noodle.   Located on the second floor,

The Bon Chon Way

Ginger Tofu Salad
Let me ask this question again,  who doesn't eat fried chicken?  A certain vegetarian would be so proud to raise a hand, or both hands even, and would say pity little feathery pet...A health fanatic would ramble about it being too fatty and cholesterol-rich and most grandmas would always say broccoli is better, hmm, how come vegetables are always better to eat, though less tasty as the meats?   Bet vegetarians wouldn't know the answers.
Anyways, I don't mean to be against any "food-ology" or principles on eating habits, I just would want to put a stress on how eating a lovely fried chicken could ease your cares away (specially if one is too hungry), and what could a double fried chicken might do even better.
Finally, I was able to drag myself into the enjoyment of knowing things behind every foodies thought, and in this case knowing more on the much blogged and talked about chicken diner, Bon Chon chicken.   I was planning for the longest time of visiting one Bon Chon restaurant after hearing from a fellow blogger how their fried chicken tastes better than commercialized fast-foods.     Also, hearing that "it is the best chicken in America," I did promise myself to have a try on this.   Then finally, thanks to one heck of a famous blogger,  I was able to check it out at the Ayala Triangle.

Bon Chon Chicken Wings

Alright, I'll be letting you in on a secret.  You see, Bon Chon has a unique way of cooking their fried chicken, it's double fried.   First, they deep fry a good batch at a controlled heat to evenly cook, till it reaches the meat inside, in this way also, it renders the fat from the chicken and leaving just the healthy goodness in it.   Once cooked, they cool it for some time and re-fry the batch, this time putting the secret sauce.   You will not see a dry, stone-hard, salty or browned chicken on your plate.   What you will get out of this process is a crunchy, without oils running down your fingers, glazed outside and savory meat inside.   I didn't care having to lick my fingers after having one and another, Soy Garlic chicken wing.   They also have it in Spicy flavor, you will know the difference of it from the other when you see chickens with toothpicks, those are the spicy ones.   I do like the spicy chicken, the peppery hotness is just fine for my delicate mouth, but if your's are the dragon-types, who likes it to the extreme spice, you can ask them while ordering so they could adjust the spice for you.
What's so appealing about their chicken is the semi-caramel sweetness with a bit of a tang of the glaze which clings to the meat, and to the skin of the chicken.   I bet my kids would really love these!
Calamari
Now that we know what the secret is (well there is still a secret though, the special sauce used in the chicken to achieve the true Bon Chon taste) , there is more that you can find either to go with those amazing chicken  or enjoy other Korean dishes.   Oh yes, Bon Chon is a Korean ideal,  the sauces are concocted at Korea and brought all over the world, where there is Bon Chon, like in the US where it became a hit.
Here are the stuffs I also hot to try:
The Ginger Tofu Salad.   Being one of the most-ordered in the salad category,  I say why not.  I didn't know that finely minced ginger can be a fine ingredient on a salad, sure I had a few asian-inspired salad but as good as this, very light on the tummy, as what a starter dish ought to be, however if you're too  health conscious this might be the best lunch or dinner.
The Calamari.   Bite-sized squid rings that's chewy but not hard to swallow.   This has always an issue with several Calamare I had.   But Bon Chon's has the ones that is just right to the taste, not salty or too spicy and has the mayo dip that's a perfect match.
However, if you've inspected, they don't have a dessert yet, but are now thinking of adding some on their menu.   From what I've heard, they had experimented on putting a yogurt station on one of their branches.   And are still on the process of incorporating it to the whole Bon Chon ideal.
Fish Taco

Bulgogi Rice
The Fish Taco.   Cream Dory cutlets are used to entice any diner who's accustomed to Mexican or Mediterranean dishes.   Though it may look Mediterranean, it sure is Korean.   Kimchi, a staple of Korean cuisine was added to enhance the sauce mixed in with the coleslaw and cream dory fillets.  The hint of kimchi blended in so well with the typical coleslaw had given me a whole new cuisine to get wind on.
Then there's Bulgogi Rice.   Let me admit, this is my first take on a Korean restaurant or fast-food for that matter.  I knew for a fact that Koreans like it hot, however, this one's a topper.   The beef slices a top the steamy rice is marinated so perfectly that it will actually  mesmerize you, no wonder this is Korea's national dish, and being grilled made it even more healthier.   Frying the chicken in a Bon Chon way may be a bit ridiculous but eating it is definitely addictive, grilling the Korean way is way more palatable.

Check out Bon Chon at Facebook at this link https://www.facebook.com/Bonchon.Chicken.Philippines
