What do you do the other 364 days that aren’t Valentine’s Day? If you know your partner, it becomes easy. It's not about thinking outside of the box, it's about giving your partner something they covet.

Whether it be a simple coffee date or movie marathon...What's important is that you did something to create a spark.  Come to think of it, you can actually do all of this and more under one roof.
Scratch the cliched dinner date, instead have a staycation at Century Park Hotel.
For only P5000 net, you can have a night at the Classic Superior room or P6000 net for a De luxe room both bundled with:

  • Set dinner for two either at the Century Tsukiji or cafe in the Park (valid while in the house)

The room package promo is from February 10 to 18, 2014

But if time does not permit, the day can still be exceptional with the Valentine offerings of Century Park Hotel.

Last Monday, hubby and I once again were able to celebrate the love month early.  We had a lovely lunch at Cafe in the Park, a sumptuous buffet spread that was meticulously prepared by the hotel's chefs.

Let me mention that the buffet run a different themed buffet everyday.  On Friday, February 14, 21014, Valentines day, the theme is "Fisherman's Day."   So enjoy fresh catch of the day dished up and mixed with a smorgasbord of gastronomic delights.

Hubby began with the soup of the day.  They usually serve two.  He had a very hearthy thick mushroom soup.

We were\blessed that day for they have lamb chops and roast beef.

There are three sections to find your kind of dessert.  This one are just the pastry choices.

The following photos are just some of the fares we had...

Let me highlight this event with my dessert of choice, Halo-halo.  It was my first time to concoct my one glass, it was a thrill (sorry I'm just "mababaw"), I had all my favorite ingredients in it with fresh milk topped off with a creamy Ube Halaya and a smooth and silky slice of Leche Flan.

Hubby had on the other hand a nicely-done Mango Crepe with Vanilla Ice cream and drizzled with chocolate syrup.

The Valentines Day Buffet dinner starts at 5:30 pm for only P 1.250 + per adult

But if you are aiming for a not-so-typical dinner, you may opt to have it at Century Tsukiji and express your love the Japanese way with "Ai Shi Teru" (Japanese Phrase for I love you) and enjoy a Kobito Set Menu for Two for only P 1,895 +  per order.  Starting form Feb. 13 to 15 during 5:30 to 9:30 pm.

So, don't you think you deserve that needed attention from your dearest loved one, this is one opportune time to cherish times with him or her.

Wishing you a wonderful V-date!  Cheers!

Rekindle Love This Valentines at These Romantic Places

There is a popular belief in the marriage and relationship world that when the doldrums hit and you find yourself more numb than really alive, you should look for ways to get back what you once had.
Do you feel like you’re up against the “love drug” in your brain?  Missing and finding that lost spark in your marriage or relationship?

According to licensed marriage and family therapists, when we were at courting stage up until we fell in love with our spouse or partner, both parties experience a chemically induced high.  Apparently, our brain was flooded with a chemical called Phenylethylamine (PEA), which remains in our brain from 6 months to 2 years. PEA is responsible the euphoria feeling, having a sense of belonging, and a feeling of obsession (which is why you want to talk and be with your new found love every moment).

As PEA fades over time (and it will) it would be hard for us to recreate the same levels of emotion within the relationship.

However...

Good news...

What you can do, increase the levels of Oxytocin in your system.  Oxytocin is known as the “bonding” chemical. It produces the deep connection to others, the lasting bond that long term relationships create. Oxytocin is released when you bond with another person – the most intense experiences are mother and infant while nursing and during orgasm. But other contacts create this bond as well: massages, eye contact, hugs, holding hands.

Cheesy or not, it is important for us to fuel such relationship if we are aiming for bliss.

To start with why not go on a real romantic date!

By dating each other on a regular basis, your marriage will be strengthened. You’ll feel loved. You’ll have a solid base to go out into the world.

It doesn't matter anymore who initiates it.  Yo just got to do it, together...

On that note, I have made an effort to compile some of my favorite dating places.

Another Happy Place For My Girls, The Happy Barn

My daughter said, "There is so many things to be giddy about this Sunday!"

Kids are just so easy to please, but what if you have a diabetic daughter that always crave for what other kids are having.  It's easy, though expensive.  There are a lot of ways to alter table sugar, and are far healthier to, and you can easily purchase at some grocery stores and health stores but, well, as I've said they cost.

We have been attending Sunday church service for years now at New Life the Fort in Market, Market, and every Sunday my kids would anticipate eating somewhere in the area.  But for me, it's not easy, putting in mind how we can lure her away from doughnut places, restaurants serving "carb" rich menus and fast foods.

Till I heard that The Happy Barn Milkshake Factory offers sugar-free and low-sugar milkshakes, and what a delight knowing that they have opened their newest branch (stall) at Market Market.

Yippee!

Just needed to breathe that out.  I used to love milkshake, it used to be part of my college days rudimentary. And I thought, it's never to late to have milkshakes.

Just look at how happy Dana and Danica are with their milkshakes.

We also love the country motif of the store.  So cute!

More reasons why we should reuse our jars at home, check out these colorful filled jars.  These are just some of the mix-ins or toppings you can add on your choice of Milkshake.

We had Vanilla Thrilla with chocolate chips, Cappuccino with dark choco bits and Oreo Milkshake.
Aside from the fact that we were having happiness in a cup,  you can also be free of guilt of gaining weight won every sip.  I was told that they are using their own made milky ice creams which are 20% less sugar and 98% fat free.

I love, love how it was concocted, no shaved ice, just pure, creamy, milky goodness and bits and pieces of happy thoughts in every sip.

Another treat to go with your milkshake is their Eggetes.  It's like a waffle but shaped differently in a cute sense.  You can have yours plain with a caramel dip or have it with something else, we had ours with cheese.

Discerning Greek Cuisine at Greeka Kouzina

If there is parmigiano, there's feta!  Yes, I'm talking of cheese varieties. Feta is just one of the food people would acquaint to Greek kitchens with, while the latter is from Italy.

With astounding archaeological sites, islands of extreme beauty, bucolic villages and some of the greatest food you’ll ever consume, Greece is on every serious travelers list (and also my dream travel, written in BOLD letters on my bucket list).  But for now, let me just savor it's cuisine ever present in the metro.

I've read a couple of write-ups about a restaurant in San Juan that serves authentic Greek cuisine.  I had an unlucky try at one of the "Mediterranean cafe" so I had been setting aside the idea of trying another one.  However, when I heard that Greeka Kouzina had branched out in SM Aura, I told myself that I'm not repealing anymore.

Greek cuisine is simple but full of flavor.  Greek recipes make use of local fresh ingredients and olive oil. Greek food is often accompanied by a little wine. That is why Greek cuisine is considered an example of the healthy Mediterranean diet.  It's a mix of old tradition and influences form other Mediterranean countries and with modern twists.

At Greeka Kouzina, dishes are served colorful and hefty, always enough for sharing with family and friends.
Four of us foodies began dinner with Fig Roka Salata (P 420).  I'm not a true-blooded vegetarian, but I'll always choose a gourmet salad over a block of non-palatable slab of meat, and this choice of salad is spot-on!  My companions actually were looking for a dressing that might have come with it.  I first dug in and found that the vinaigrette was already mixed in.

When we usually mean "salad”, in this case salata, we tend to imagine a bowl of greens with slivers of carrots and peppers and other healthy stuff nestled among the leaves.  But imagine, crisp, fresh mix of romaine, iceberg lettuces to rockets (also known as arugula) melded with what made it stand out above usual norm of eating salads are ingredients that made it real Greek in nature- slivers of walnuts, figs and sun-dried tomatoes.  I've read somewhere that Greek have a penchant over their regional tomatoes, thus the sun-dried tomatoes gave it a little zest to the whole bed of veggies, all topped off with parmesan cheese.

The carnivore session began when plate upon plates of meat dishes were laid to our Greeka trapézi (table).

For appetizer we had Kalamari Tiganito (P 290) served with a wedge of lemon and something like a yogurt-dressing.  Nothing spectacular about this battered squid deep fried in oil to a crisp.  However, the dip seemed to accentuate the simply seasoned yet rubbery textured seafood.

Their eísodos (entree in the English-speaking gourmands' term) proved to be promising.  When the wait-staff came with a plate of Paidakia (P 595), Greece' version of lamb chops, we all were in awe.  First, the aroma was overwhelming and so enticing albeit the oils around the lamb cutlets.  Paidakia is actually a delicacy (so I've read) where lambs are marinated with oregano, lemon juice, herbs, thyme and pepper and then grilled at a high temperature until they are well done (no pink meat allowed), usually over a charcoal fire. They are generally accompanied by patates tiganites (the Greek version of French fries), a combo that's as irresistible as it is cholesterol-raising.

Let me put a slight break to our meaty rendezvous with  Watercress Pasta (P180) which apparently was served together with Beef Souvlaki.  Honestly, I was taken aback when I saw the jiggly fresh semi micro-greens on top of a well-cooked pasta with cream sauce.  And do you know that watercress is a cousin of broccoli, cauliflower and cabbage?  It was my first time to have tasted it as well.  It actually left a bitter tang on my taste and the strangest of taste like that of the arugula (I'm not a big fan of arugula though).

Their menu is an expanse of meat traditionally prepared by how a typical Greek cook would do it at their own Greek Fat Kouzina.  One famous beef dish is the Beef Souvlaki (P 430).  This gorgeous beef kebab  was cooked right through the center of the big chunks of beef.  Though cooked very well done, you can still notice that the meat is tender and juicy.  Alternately skewered with tomatoes, bell peppers and onions, they have always been the diners' favorite in any Greek resto available in the metro.  The sheer oregano (Greek) taste is what sets it apart from other Mediterranean kebabs.

This next meat dish looked like our typical fire-grilled pork chops, until you sink your teeth into it.   Krasates (P 480)  may also be simple, but elevated with compound butter on the top.  The garlic-infused butter can make a slight difference in the meat Filipino food genre, but Greeka's are more flavorful, though your chewing workout will probably be useful here.

The meat dishes were paired also with Moussaka (P 180), I was actually hoping for their Couscous and some pita breads.  But their Moussaka have proven it's worth to be included in our menu for that said dinner. I'm not sure if this was a staple in Greek homes, but I don't mind having it everyday.  Preparation however is laborious, since it's a layered dish which requires several techniques including baking.  The layering consists of fried eggplants at the bottom where the cheesy bechamel was poured over and topped with feta cheeses before baking.

I consider the last food feature as a reward for us foodies who conquered traditional meat-endowed meal.  Check out these pretty foodistas capturing every details as we reach the finality of a much-deserved Greek try out, Roch of  rochkirstin.com and Hana of dollhana.com, also with us was Aldous of  Aldous Ate the World.

What a divine Goddess dessert Baklava (P 180) is.   Well-sugared chopped nuts are sandwiched in between two  sheets of filo dough.  Unlike other bars which are sliced after baking, Baklava is sliced first, making the process really absurd.  Once cooked a slice is topped majestically with authentic Greek yogurt then drizzled with rose-water steeped syrup.   I love the transfusion of the syrup and the yogurt but not to the point of being impressed.

How I wish they have more options on the dessert menu though.  But of course, I would prefer going back with my family.

Travel: Another Jem of a Place Unearthed in Marikina

Another spur of the moment, "respond quickly issue" to be met and guess where our itchy feet took us today, albeit the number coding being implemented in Manila which our car have never been excused.   I've been working on helping out a friend in Milan, Italy prepare for her grand wedding on May, and part of the list is to buy hats and fascinators.  I've been to Greenbelt 5 and got a bit disappointed seeing how expensive brocade hats and hair-pieces.  I also made a number of trips to Divisoria and bought these...

But this particular wedding inspired from the Royal Wedding of Prince William to Kate Middleton, had me looking other satisfyingly gorgeous head ornaments that will surely fancy the girls of the entourage.

Kate Middleton wearing a charming mini hat, in black.
Thanks to the the WHAM's (an FB group of wort-at-home-moms), I was able to gather enough suppliers to check for these most coveted accessories.

With much Googling, I found this site...Lucban Hats' website, and see what jewel my girls and I have stumbled upon.

We were instantly brought to hat heaven...
We marveled at hats of all sorts of colors and designs.  I didn't even know first which to hold and  try, my eyes were like rolling all-over and it's like I was a kid on a candy spree.

Hehe, look at me on a selfie episode wearing one of the cutest light turquoised-color sinamay hat.

They also have quite a few against the summer rays of the beach and also for the fashion-sensed guys.
We particularly adore this pastel pink, flurry huge hat...

I just can't resist not trying another one.  This royal blue hat with black band and sinamay ribbons I bought for my mama, who is one of the 43 pairs of  Principal Sponsors of that wedding.  She will be surprised.

Trying out this elegant black velvet mini.
Dana wearing one of the hat she like.
Compared to the ones bought in Divi, theirs are more elaborate in design and quality is unmatchable.  Fascinators'  price start from P300 up and the hats from P600 to... I'm not sure how much.  I find them pretty affordable compared to what we can buy on specialty boutiques in the malls.   The lady who assisted us, told us that we can have a particular design to be used but we need to expect a higher cost for that. However I don't think they make a particular design without really mass producing them.  You can hardly get a design having two or more items on hand, specially at this time of the month, for they replenish at the end of every month and according to her, stocks don't last that long because many are buying in bulk, even foreigners have found their path here.

They are open from 8 am to 5 pm every Monday to Friday.  Best to give them a ring or an email for other queries or before coming over.

So you think Marikina is only famous for their shoe making skills huh!  Think again, it's also a treasure trove of culinary spots, places of interests and more.  My kids had a fun time checking scenic spots along the River Banks and let me just commend the authorities at Marikina, aside for being one of the cleanest (if not the cleanest) city in Metro Manila, the towns are very organized as well, we didn't find it hard to go around and look for Lucban Hats Factory.

Nutella and Bacon, Better Together

It's my third time to join the WORLD NUTELLA DAY and I have never been more ecstatic.  Though I have to make a quick visit to the nearby grocery store to buy a jar of chocolate hazelnut goodness, which spells Nutella, it didn't mind and nothing hampered me to participate in this year's global event for Nutella lovers.

To read more about The World Nutella Day, do kindly read here:

This is my first entry: http://www.gastronomybyjoy.com/2011/01/nutella-by-dana-banana.html

My second entry:  For the Love of Pizza and Nutella

Today, February 5, 2014, bloggers all over the globe are making waves, as recipes upon recipes, photos of Nutella and how it's indulged, are being shared and compiled at World Nutella Day website.  The event is being led by Sara from Ms. Adventures in Italy and Michelle from Bleeding Espresso, now already running on it's 8th year despite some issues met  months back.

My share to the exciting and yummy event - the recipe Nutella Bacon Brownies.

Are those brownies calling your name or what?

THE NUTELLA BACON BROWNIES
Ingredients:

1/2 cup (1 stick) softened butter
1 cup sugar
2 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla
1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
1/2 cup flour
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon baking powder
1/3 cup nutella hazelnut spread
1 cup crumbled bacon (fried and dripped bacon in bits)

To do:

1. Whisk in the sugar with the butter until combined.
2. Add the eggs, one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Stir in vanilla.
3. Slowly add the Nutella.
3. Dump in the dry ingredients and mix until combined, add bacon then pour the batter into the prepared pan.
4. Bake for 35-40 minutes at 350 C or until a toothpick inserted in the middle comes out with a few crumbs clinging to it. Allow brownies to cool for at least 45 minutes.

Enjoy! Enjoy!  Promise!

I mean how can you go wrong with Nutella and it's new sweetheart, Bacon, 'nuf said!
