A Leonardo Da Vinci Awardee Honoring Indigenous People in Her Art

When you have nothing to do on this day, you still have time to visit the ongoing NCCA exhibition at the Intramuros, Manila and see the the art exhibit of Marites Van Vianen, a recent Leonardo Da Vinci awardee.

It's a collection in honor of her Mangyan roots thru “Katribu: Kapwa Pilipino.”  Van Vianen, Filipino Artist who won the Leonardo da Vinci award for 2023 and 2024 in Milan, Italy;  Bronze awardee 2022 and Silver Awardee 2024 at the Academique Art Science et Letres in Paris, France and a Member of Societe des Artistes Independants at the Grand Palais, Paris honors the Indigenous people in this art exhibit. Featured artworks include Whang-Od and the Mangyan Tribe of Mindoro. Exhibition is up to October 31, 2024.




Van Vianen also joined the “La Mode en Moi – the Fashion in Me” art and fashion exhibition at the Business Art Fair in Paris last October 18-20, 2024 alongside 24 Filipino artists from around the world.

October marks the Indigenous month and Whang-Od, a living cultural treasure, exemplifies the essence of "katribu" and "kapwa." As the oldest traditional Kalinga tattoo artist, she continues to pass down the ancient art of "batok" to younger generations.  Katribu, Kapwa Pilipino: To live in the spirit of our shared identity and care for our fellow tribes in the Philippines.
