Pasko sa Intramuros: DOT's Way of Paving Filipino Tradition Back to the Walled City

WOW!  World of Walls...World of Wonder...

Those were the words left to us and the children of Intramuros during yesterday's speech given by Sen. Richard Gordon himself at the event dubbed as "Pasko sa Intranuros" hosted by the Department of Tourism. The man behind WOW Philippines, Senator Gordon placed the Philippines on the world tourism map with his famous WOW Philippines program when he was appointed as Tourism Secretary  and the country’s tourism industry thrived under his watch.

The historic walled city sparkled with lights and filled the air with joy.

Department of Tourism (DOT) Secretary Wanda Teo was joined by Senate Tourism Committee Chair Nancy Binay and Senator Dick Gordon.

Running until January 31, the said event will feature a Christmas Bazaar on Postigo Street that highlights the culture and products of different regions in the Philippines. Tourists could go Christmas shopping from 4:00 to 10:00 pm during weekdays and 12 noon to 10:00 pm on weekends.

The launch of the bazaar was graced by DOT Region IV Director Rebecca Villanueva-Labit.

Below are just some of the products you can buy at the bazaar, these are perfect gifts to give and you get to support and promote local products.

Coffee liquors from Cafe Amadeo

Fresh fruit-flavored teas from Silang

Jarred fruits from Amadeo Silang

Vegetable chips

Organic and natural products

Teo emphasized that the event is just as an introduction to upcoming projects that aimed to boost tourist visitors in Intramuros.

“Pasko sa Intramuros is just the beginning, I assure you I will give Intramuros the attention it deserves as a national heritage site and cultural tourism destination,” said Teo.

Meanwhile, Senator Gordon commended Teo for her efforts in reviving Intramuros.

“Natutuwa ako na binigyan ng pansin ni Secretary “wonder” Wanda Teo at ng Department of Tourism ang ating Intramuros dahil dito nagsimula ang domestic tourism,” he said.

After their speech, gift-giving to the children commenced.

It was also an opportune witnessing of the lighting ceremony of the 15-feet Christmas lantern designed by the award-winning lantern maker, Roland Quiambao which was held at the Plaza Roma at the front of Manila Cathedral.

After which, everyone was invited to go to Barbara's for the presentation of the Casa Azul Plans.  Above is a photo of the Senators and Secretary Wanda riding the calesa on their way to Barbara's.

While some of us rode the historic and archaic tranvia.

DOT Undersecretary for Public Affairs, Communication and Special Projects Kat de Castro noted that the revival of Intramuros is also a preparation for the 65th Ms. Universe Beauty Pageant on January 30, 2017.

Other special events lined up during the Christmas fair are festival parades, product demonstrations, culinary events, concerts featuring the country’s popular bans and artists, among others.
