Blood-letting and Food Fair at DepEd

There's really more to DepEd than just Education and providing a strong citizenship through values formation and poverty alleviation.  Now Department of Education employees make a bee line to the blood-letting activity that highlights the importance of blood to save lives in the face of disasters such as earthquakes and other natural and human-induced disasters.

Education Secretary Br. Armin A. Luistro FSC said it is important that the department conducts blood donation activities among its employees to further bring out the sense of community and volunteerism in the DepEd family.

“I am pleased by the willingness of DepEd employees to donate blood which we all know is a very important component in saving lives,” he added.

The Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) of the Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office of the DepEd spearheads the activity in collaboration with the Philippine National Red Cross.

DepEd has been making crucial moves in establishing a mindset of preparedness and safety among its employees in dealing with both natural and human-made disasters. An OSH committee was created in June 2011 to develop accident prevention programs, identify all hazards in the workplace and recommend action in order to be prepared for any eventuality.

Relative to this, the OSH committee will be coming up with a nutrition optimization program to encourage healthy eating among its employees. One of the activities being lined up is a food fair slated on September 18 at the DepEd main building lobby to be participated in by vendors and suppliers of healthy food.

“The food that we eat is part of the choice we make everyday in order to live a healthy lifestyle,” Luistro explained.
