Exile on the Main St., Katipunan Ave.


It was those kind of times when you feel you want to regress from being a non-parent and go back to the kind of life you have before being one.  Every parent have his or her qualms about trying to be the parent their kids need them to be.  It's a 24-7 job, without pay.

However, my reward is seeing the result of my kids' hard works. Specially when it is reflected in creative and artistic ways.  All my kids are ceative in their very ways but one girl actually stands out. She eventually followed her heart and took Fine Arts.


 I know it's not easy to have an artist for a daughter, for one, the course is expensive.  I'm not even talking about her art materials yet.  But when you see her create something, her expression, her technique and what would be a mess and unlikely to be visualized at, will develop into a beautiful artwork.  Something she would be proud to say, she was able to make something. And as her parent, of course, that's one kind of fulfillment.

So it was just timely to discover a place in Katipunan where my husband and I realized something brewing for our daughter, something that would inspire us more as parents and probably could give added inspiration to our daughter.

This seemingly, watering hole slash college tambayan proves to be its namesake -an Exile.

Exile on Main St., the hole-in-a-wall, got its name from the owners' favorite album by the Rolling Stones.  It all started in 2012, with three college friends and theater practitioners, five crew (including he owners), without restaurant experience decided to put this joint up.

This dinner was an awesome experience for me and my husband after going around Katipunan searching for it.  Let me sum up our experience in two main attractions.



IT'S AN ARTISTS'(CREATIVES) HAVEN

The place houses collections of what-nots, paintings from local and student artists.  Together with friends and one owner into interior decorating, the place turned into a cool place filled with color and eclectic way of showing off their collections.

Your eyes will just roll around in wonder seeing details of designs from floor to walls to the ceiling.

IT'S A FOODIE HAVEN




Like their eclectic choice of interior, their menu also show a hint of that principle as well.  

Going beyond the norm and trying to please their diners as they would themselves with the dishes the owners/ friends love and putting bits of wackiness.

To begin with, wontons oddly done, filled with chopped longanisa and fried to crisp and named Longganisa Con Sinta.  A top-notch appetizer or bar chow is served with Black Vinegar & Salsa.

Their menu, btw, seemed to like a play script, or words pertaining to plays- Front Acts for the Appetizers, Headliners for the Entree, Second Set for the Pasta dishes, Encores for the desserts, Groupies for the add ons and Pick me Ups for the beverages.

Frequent Flyer Chicks with the China sauce

For the Headliners, they put the spotlight on buffalo wings.  They do however have pork, fish and a Filipino fave.

They call their chicken wings "Frequent Flyer Chicks with flavors inspired from different country's of origin.  Order in batch of 6 pcs with rice is only P 130, while bigger with 12 pcs is only P 215.

Above is a photo of Frequent Flyer Chicks with the China sauce, the wings were deep fried and coated with a savory soy sauce and honey coating with a spicy kick, served sprinkled with toasted sesame seeds.


Frequent Flyer Chicks Texas, on one hand are wings drips with a thick coating of slow-cooked, tomato-based barbecue sauce.  You'll love the smokey barbeque hint on this.


The third variety, Frequent Flyer Chicks Java  have that unique sauce go with it.  Imagine your wings would taste sweet, spicy and salty all-together, but what sets it different is the creamy satay or peanut sauce and the roasted ground peanuts.


If you come in really famished and ready to devour a whole pig then, Torn and Frayed ( P 160) is for you! 

Though this is not your average pork stew.  It's pulled pork stewed in a beautiful mesh of plum, soy and sesame sauces.  Caramelized ginger and garlic adds to the flavor.  You'll definitely order more rice wit this bowl.  It's also hefty for two.


 Baboy O' Riley (P 135) is their version of bagnet only it's thinly sliced liempo.  You can't go wrong having it with their salsa and black vinegar.


Our favorite and everyone's' weekend viand- Monggo Tinapa Mo! (P 95).  Undeniably a classic given their delicious and amped up healthy twist.  The only resto, we knew that cooks monggo bean soup with malunggay, chicharon and tinapa.

I love the smokiness that the tinapa bits give to the dish too. This one is served with rice.


Pasta plays a special role in student's dining, thus five different types on the menu.  One I would recommend is the Sunshine Pesto (P 120).  I could argue with you about my special affection with pesto all day and theirs come second to none (except the one I make, of course).

Home-grown, home-spun with love pesto sauce.


If you want something creamy on your pasta, I would suggest The White Stripes (P 155).  An added treat is the fennel sausages, they make in-house.  Moreover, the pasta is tossed in roasted garlic and basil cream sauce.


Sounding a wee silly is this pasta dish- Dorytos (P 180).  With a base of Tomato and cream sauce with herbs and seafood broth, topped off with a pan-seared fish, I don't know why it's really called that, but heck it's good.


Not yet on the menu is the 4'Shroom Pie.

It's an egg-less pie, filled with Enoki, Button, Shiitake and Oyster mushrooms all soaked in beautifully in herbed cheese sauce.

You wouldn't want to miss dessert after reading this.


Any brownie-lover might agree on me on this.  A soft, chewy fudgy block of Dutch cocoa, semisweet chocolate and walnuts drizzled with Caramel sauce is the best pick-me-upper!  Y TU Mama Brownie (P 85).


After easing right through a delightful dinner, last stop was equally smashing with No-Eggs-Were-Harmed Choco Banana Cake WiFudge (P 45).  This moist Choco Banana Cake made me want to bake up a storm in my oven as memories of my baking days flashed right back.  For an affordable "student-priced" slice of cake, this is enough to either end a meal or a snack paired with coffee or any drinks  

Slap a scoop of Exile Creamery Co,'s choice of ice cream for an additional P 50 or P 60.
